2020 is here, and it’s all about micro-goals. Micro-goals are your long-term goals broken down into everyday mini-goals, or mini-milestones. No win is too small – and we’re excited to celebrate them all with you!
These may be micro-goals we’re talkin’, but they make a BIG impact in the long run:
Budgeting is intimidating, especially if you haven’t found the method that works best for you. But, if you’re a beginner, a pen and paper can get the job done.
Sticking to a budget is tough. It does require discipline. If you’re struggling to stick to your financial resolutions, your first micro-goal is to find an accountability partner. This person should be someone you trust and are comfortable talking details and some possible not-so-fun-to-hear advice. Schedule a monthly meeting with that person to ensure that you’re both tracking towards your business goals.
Life throws a lot of curveballs your way. Some planned (babies or moving into a new house), some unplanned (car break down or natural disaster). While it’s daunting to think about what the future holds, it’s manageable to prepare for those curveballs! An emergency fund is an essential part of any financial strategy to safeguard you for the unknown.
A typical emergency fund consists of three months to a year’s worth of expenses – put away for one of those life events. However, to build it, don’t worry about how much you’re putting away. Even $5.00 is five more than you had before to cover you in case of an emergency. As you start the year, your second micro-goal is to commit to putting aside an amount you can handle toward your emergency fund. Is this something you can commit to doing once a month, every two weeks, or even every week?
The key is to remain persistent. We forget that even baby steps move us forward!
If you’re looking for some support to get started, then, your credit union is an incredible partner for resources and aid to achieve those financial goals. From low-interest loans and high-interest savings accounts to financial counseling and investment advice, credit unions provide a ton of tools just for you.
